Roland is a Japanese manufacturer of electronic musical instruments, electronic equipment and software. Founded in 1972 by Ikutaro Kakehashi, Roland has been one of the top names in professional music equipment since the late 1970s. The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, introduced in 1980, is one of the most popular programmable analog drum machines; its distinctive analog sounds, such as its cowbell sound and its kick drum, have become pop-music clichés, heard on countless recordings. In 2016 Roland, partnering with Serato, released the DJ-808, the first DJ controller to include built-in drum sequencing with Roland’s iconic TR drum sounds. This was followed by the DJ-505 and DJ-202 controllers.
